Vocabulary Words: cityscape, shape, overlap, fantasy, proportion
Materials: wallpaper scraps cut in 1" squares, colored paper, tempera, photos of students
After reading "Tar
Beach" by Faith Ringgold we examined the illustrations. Students were
then given a blue paper and asked to paint several buildings to create
a cityscape. We then added squares to represent windows. A border was
added by gluing down wallpaper squares along the edges. For a finishing
touch students took their photo (I made a copy of the yearbook page to
use), cut out the head portion, and glued to a white paper. They
modeled what they would look like flying, and then drew on a body.
After coloring these with markers they cut them out and glued them to
their cityscape.
