The Northwest Coastal Indians used very little negative space in their artwork, supposedly believing that this would prevent the evil spirits from having access into the occupant of the mask. This project involves layering the colors, creating symmetrical shapes, and using accented neutral schemes. By limiting color choices, students are much more apt to experiment with shapes on cheeks and forehead.
