Above and Below

Vocabulary Words: Multiple Viewpoint, shape, texture, realism

Materials: 12x18" white paper, sharpie, crayons

I began this lesson by bringing in several root vegetables. We discussed the textures and colors. I then asked students to pretend they had a magical camera - this camera was very thin, and you slid it into the ground, took your picture, and you could see what was going on below the surface. We then drew our horizon line and below it we drew the vegetables. My students compost, so they know how important worms are underground; naturally we had to include one! Since we draw these early spring the vegetables I bring to class don't have leaves, but we draw them anyways. I have students do a rubbing on the cement wall with brown crayon on the bottom half to show dirt.
