Our fifth grade studies the Mayan culture for social studies, so I integrated this project to go with their curriculum. We approached this project by looking at Mayan writing with a brief description of the rules. We discovered that girls begin with Na and boys with Ah, so our projects began with this symbol. Then, using the rules of Mayan writing, we began to translate (to the best of our ability) our names. The students then created their names in glyph form, colored, cut out, and pasted on colored paper.
