"A popular tradition for New Year's celebrations and annual fiestas is the making of papier-mache rattles. These joyful noisemakers are usually shaped to resemble colorful bird heads. The rattles are shaken to welcome generous spirits of the new year and to drive away unhappy spirits remaining from the past." Taken from Multicultural Art Activities by Teacher Created Materials, Inc.

After distributing tissue rolls, students will trace the end of the tissue roll onto the tagboard and cut out two (2) to cap off the ends of the roll. Cap off one end and secure with masking tape. Add popcorn or rice and cap off the other end. Secure the craft stick to the roll for the handle. At this point I distribute the colored paper. Each student will need two sheets of the main color. One sheet will be glued onto the tissue roll, and the other one will be traced as before to cover the tagboard caps. Cut out patterns, overlapping each, and glue onto bottom of roll. Then fold the beak paper in half. Fold back the side that opens, and cut out two rainbows. When this opens up it will resemble a beak. Glue onto tube. Cut out circles from the white for eyes. Color centers black with sharpie. Add patterns out of colored paper and place above eyes. Secure feathers by poking a small hole near the rear at the top.
